Tina-Louise Lukaschus

Beach Sculptor

“Composing sculptures that reflect harmony through form, fit and compositional structure. Weather-worn natural materials, particularly pieces found at the beach become the medium used to convey this sense of balance and harmony of my artwork.”

Having always had a love of the outdoors and nature in general, woodland hikes and walks along the scenic shores of Lake Ontario are among Tina’s favourite activities.

Every outing along the beach brings a new promise of adventure, as you never know what you’ll find on any given day, especially when stormy weather has washed up unique specimens of driftwood. Finding incredible stones is also hardly a challenge with the seemingly endless array of shapes and variety, and the only real difficulty is, having to narrow down the selection to fit the capacity of one’s backpack and lift the substantial weight for the return trip.

Many of Tina’s finds seem to ‘speak’ to her, allowing an intuitive grasp of how these sculptures are to be arranged, with the primary goal lying in balancing the materials comprising the piece by gravity alone; only once this has been achieved, is the final form ‘set’ with the epoxy used to cement the artwork.

With some of my more dramatic pieces, acrylic paints add a shot of vibrant colour to add another layer of character to create something truly unique out of the smooth stones and graceful flowing lines of the driftwood that have been collected. There are many factors that inspire Tina’s creative process. She often wonders if it’s more fun going on adventurous hunts for the ‘perfect stone’, or enjoying the focus and intensity of bringing the pieces into gravity-defying form.

Ultimately, it is the privilege of being able to share her sculptures with others interested in the art world, particularly through Instagram posts, special shows, and gallery exhibits.
