Ruth-Anne Cain
Potter
“My passion is making functional pieces that are intended for daily use in the kitchen and home, that go to mug for your morning cup of coffee or your favourite serving bowl. I appreciate the unique and whimsical and use different clays and glazes to achieve some beautiful patterns and textures.”
What started out as a way to let her creative side out 35 years ago has become a life long love of throwing and hand building pottery. Cain who is now retired calls Scugog home. Using her time to explore the outdoors and her artistic side further. It is Cain’s love of nature that inspires her work. You can see the influences of nature in her works, the inner rings of her pieces that have not been smoothed out instead are left to play homage to the rings of the trees created as they grow.
Bark, leaves and rocks also influence Cain’s work – the textures and colours. Fallen leaves become stamps pressed into the clay before firing to premanently preserve this fleeting piece of nature.
Cain continues to explore and learn as she further expands her practice. Animals both wild and domestic such as birds and sheep make apperences time to time in her hand built works. Continuing to experiment and allowing her creativity to flow through her work means Cain’s practice is ever evolving. From new glazing methods to new inspiration Cain’s works though ever changing she still hold true to what started her practice a passion for making functional pieces to add some art to everyday life.
