Karen Whalley

Jeweller, Painter

“I’ve been drawing and painting since I was about four years old. I spent many weekends walking in the forest with my father. Looking at the starts was my favourite pastime, and the colours in my jewelry reflect the planets,” – Karen Whalley

Port Perry local Karen Whalley was influenced by her father to create art at a young age. He was a professional photographer, and Karen took after him as a creative. Although she enjoys photography, Karen prefers the painting and jewellery making experiences because of the processes that come along with them.

With jewellery, Karen begins with the element of colour, and working with those that complement each other. Feedback from customers is a crucial part of her process.

When it comes to painting, Karen enjoys to paint her surroundings. Images that encapsulate the town of Port Perry tend to inspire her quickly; a location such as Lake Scugog or a specific object such as a red Muskoka chair are some examples of her local inspiration. Nature and trees currently captivate her the most. “I have a bit of an obsession with trees…nature is what I mostly create off of,” she said.

Karen wants to attempt to create something that will have her stepping out of her comfort zone even more than she already has. She wants to continue to use her surroundings as influence for her art, while attempting a variety of mediums.
