Joanna Malcolm

Painter, Mixed Media Artist, and Children’s Book Author & Illustrator

“Painting abstract, impressions and whimsy I give voice to environmental issues and subjects that capture my travels and life experience.”

Born and raised near Port Perry, Ontario, Joanna Malcolm came to art after a 20-year career in nursing. When on a leave from her career, she enrolled in a painting class and discovered she could paint. Over the years Joanna developed her figurative skills and distinctive style through studies at the Haliburton School of the Arts and she has never looked back. Much like she stepped into her life as an artist Joanna’s paintings are an awakening. Not keen to be pushed into any one box, her work is eclectic and varied. Her landscapes display an exuberant palette and loose interpretation that push paintings toward rich harmonious abstracted works. Her love of travel is painted in bold and whimsical strokes that force the eye in and around the spaces of the painting. Joanna recently launched her 2nd children’s book The Feeling Tree. “Art has become a part of me”, Joanna states, “instinctive and as crucial as breath”.
