Christine Mizon
Weaver
“With attention to an Eco-friendly process, I am a lover of textile crafting with a focus on free-flow weaving and millinery. All of the pieces whether they are from my loom, sewing machine or knitting needles are one of a kind, a little quirky sometimes and full of colour.”
Haughty Hats has been a registered company for over 18 years. What started as a knitted hat business, has diversified into a craft business focused on the making and crafting of textiles – sewn, knit, felted, and woven. It has also become a recovery mission of beautiful textiles and materials that would otherwise be discarded to the landfill – which Christine knits, sews, and weaves into hats, scarves, cowls, mats, and table linens. Each unique and quirky item is made by hand.
Christine’s sustainability vision is to keep 80% of the materials used in her sewn products (like the summer hats) to “rescued” materials. That includes the tartan which is brought from a mill in Scotland as “oddments” – discarded leftovers from kilt manufacturing.
Christine’s woven and fulled pieces are made from locally sourced 100% raw wool fibre on my rigid heddle loom and drop spindle. Some wool is hand-dyed giving the piece an irregular colour finish, which for Christine, is the most pleasing part of the weaving process…. the unknown result when it comes off the loom.
