Artist Statement
My Story
My work is an exploration of storytelling through acrylic and mixed media on canvas, where I use layers of texture, color, and material to give shape to my inner voice and emotional landscape. I am drawn to the quiet language of the natural world, seeking to distill its beauty into forms that feel both simple and deeply evocative.
Working intuitively, I approach each piece as a dialogue between control and surrender. My paintings often begin as fragments of poetry—thoughts, rhythms, or emotions that gradually transform into visual compositions. In this process, words dissolve into movement, and meaning emerges through gesture, layering, and color. Each work becomes a space where the seen and the felt intersect.
A recurring motif in my practice is the flower, which I explore through abstract expression as a symbol of the soul. To me, each bloom embodies a fleeting yet powerful existence—vibrant, delicate, and ever-changing. Through this symbolism, I reflect on the cycles of becoming, being, and letting go. My work is a meditation on impermanence, resilience, and the quiet grace found within transformation.
Ultimately, my paintings are invitations—to pause, to feel, and to connect. I hope to create spaces where viewers can encounter their own emotions and interpretations, engaging with the unspoken narratives that shape both personal and collective experience.
My Approach
My Korean heritage subtly informs the way I approach painting. I am drawn to a sense of restraint, openness, and quiet beauty, allowing space for both intention and chance to coexist within each work. Although I work primarily with acrylic, I often use it like watercolor, diluting the paint with generous amounts of water on cotton canvas. I allow the pigments to flow, stain, and drip naturally, embracing their movement rather than controlling every mark. This transparency reflects my fascination with the purity and fragility of life—its fleeting moments, quiet emotions, and delicate balance.
Each painting develops through the gradual accumulation of layers. Transparent washes are built over time, creating depth and luminosity while preserving traces of what came before. I then introduce mixed media—including pen and ink, oil sticks, and other drawing materials—to add texture, rhythm, and visual dialogue. These contrasting elements create tension between softness and boldness, spontaneity and structure, allowing stories to emerge organically within the work. For me, the process is as meaningful as the finished painting. Every layer carries a memory, every gesture records a moment, and together they become a visual narrative that reflects the complexity, resilience, and beauty of human experience.
