Kent Farndale’s history of civic involvement began in the early 1970’s when she successfully campaigned to retain and restore Port Perry Town Hall into a theatre for live performance. She even sang there in the 1980’s as a member of the Scugog Choral Society. Kent was instrumental in the creation of an art gallery when Scugog built a new library in 1982. After 10 years of organizing the gallery, the Scugog Memorial Library Board paid tribute to her, naming the gallery in her honour, as well as establishing the Kent Farndale Bursary for the Arts. Kent helped in the early days of the formation of the Scugog Council for the Arts and has long been an Advisor to the Board.
Her awards and recognitions are numerous and include the Durham Region Art of Transition Lifetime Achievement Award, the Province of Ontario’s 10-Year Service Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Trust. She is the recipient of the Lescarbot Award, given by the federal government of Canada to people who have contributed immensely to their arts community, and has been awarded the Canada 125 Commemorative Medal, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and the Canada 150 Medal. Kent is a life member of the Ontario Crafts Council, and a supporter of the recently renovated Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art. Since 1981, the OCC has recognized individuals for outstanding contribution to crafts over an extended period with a Mather Award, which Kent was awarded in 2007.
